ACDeM is a Pan-African policy and advocacy organisation dedicated to strengthening democratic governance, protecting media freedom, and empowering citizens to participate meaningfully in public life across the continent.
About Us
The Africa Centre for Democracy and Media (ACDeM) is a non-partisan Africa regional research and policy organisation advancing democracy, media excellence, and informed public debate through rigorous research, analysis, strategic advocacy, and collaborative partnerships.
It works to strengthen media systems as a driver of community and national development, accountability in governance, and informed public engagement across Africa through the building of the capacity of journalists, supporting high-quality public interest reporting, and fostering collaboration across regions to improve access to reliable information.
Our work recognises that strong media systems are essential for effective governance, responsive institutions, and empowered communities.
Through training, research, and cross-border partnerships, we initiate public education and debate which would enable the citizenry to effectively participate in the governance and development of their communities.
We support journalists and media organisations to ethically and professionally improve their reportage on issues such as public services delivery, economic development, and socio-economic challenges that directly affect people's lives.
We also promote collaboration between Africa and other regions, particularly Asia and the Arab world, to enable knowledge exchange, innovation, and shared solutions to common development challenges.
Our Purpose
An Africa where democratic governance is deeply rooted, where media is free and trusted, and where every citizen has a meaningful voice in shaping their society and future.
To strengthen democratic institutions, promote and protect media freedom, and foster an informed, engaged citizenry through research, advocacy, capacity building, and strategic partnerships across Africa.
Our Work
ACDeM delivers impact through four interconnected pillars, combining rigorous research with hands-on advocacy, capacity building, and strategic partnerships.
We conduct independent, evidence-based research on democratic governance, media ecosystems, elections, civic space, and the rule of law across Africa. Our publications inform policy, spark debate, and hold power to account.
View PublicationsWe engage governments, regional bodies, civil society, and international institutions to promote democratic norms, media freedom standards, and accountable governance frameworks.
Our CampaignsWe train journalists, community leaders, election monitors, youth and women leaders, and civil society organisations to strengthen democratic participation and professional media practice.
Training ProgrammesWe convene high-level forums, dialogues, and roundtables that bring together diverse actors from governments, the media, academia and civil society to collaborate on solutions to democratic challenges.
Upcoming EventsWe observe, analyse, and report on electoral processes across Africa, supporting credible elections through independent monitoring, civic education, and post-election dialogue.
Election ReportsWe support the development of professional, ethical, independent, and financially sustainable media ecosystems that serve the public interest and strengthen democratic accountability.
Media InitiativesOur Approach
Our methodology is collaborative, contextual, and courageous. We do not impose solutions — we work alongside African actors to build home-grown democratic resilience.
Every intervention is grounded in deep, locally-informed analysis of the political, social, and media environment.
We co-design programmes with local partners, civil society, and affected communities to ensure relevance and ownership.
Our advocacy is always anchored to rigorous evidence, strengthening credibility and impact at every level of engagement.
We connect activists, journalists, and democratic actors across borders, building continental networks of shared learning and mutual support.
Focus Areas
Our work spans six interconnected areas that are essential to building strong, inclusive, and accountable democracies across Africa.
Strengthening state institutions, promoting rule of law, separation of powers, and constitutional governance frameworks across the continent.
Defending journalists, supporting independent media, and advocating for legal and regulatory environments that protect press freedom.
Promoting credible electoral processes, voter education, political pluralism, and meaningful participation for all citizens.
Protecting and expanding civic space for civil society, human rights defenders, and community organisations to operate freely.
Addressing disinformation, internet freedoms, digital surveillance, and the impact of technology on democratic discourse and rights.
Fostering inclusive democratic participation by building the leadership capacities and political voices of youth, women, and the marginalised across Africa.
Why It Matters
Across Africa, democratic gains of recent decades are under growing pressure. ACDeM exists because freedom, accountability, and truth require active, organised, and relentless defence.
Military coups, constitutional manipulation, and electoral fraud threaten hard-won democratic progress in multiple African states. Independent voices and institutions remain critical bulwarks.
Journalists across Africa face arrests, violence, and censorship with impunity. An informed public requires a free, professional, and protected media ecosystem.
The spread of mis- and disinformation is corroding public trust, inflaming social tensions, and undermining electoral integrity across the continent's digital spaces.
Partnerships
ACDeM's impact is amplified through strategic partnerships with institutions that share our commitment to democracy, media freedom, and an informed Africa. We welcome collaboration at every level.
